β‘ Quick-Start Checklist
π Building Your CV
Step-by-step guide to creating a professional CV
Add Personal Information
Start by filling in your contact details including your full name, email address, phone number, and location. This information appears at the top of your CV and makes it easy for employers to reach you.
Use a professional email address (firstname.lastname@email.com) rather than casual or outdated email addresses.
Write Your Professional Summary
Create a compelling 2-3 sentence summary that highlights your key qualifications, experience, and career goals. This is your elevator pitch - make it count!
Tailor your summary to each job application by including relevant keywords from the job description.
Add Work Experience
List your work history in reverse chronological order (most recent first). For each position, include: company name, job title, employment dates, and 3-5 bullet points describing your achievements and responsibilities.
Use action verbs (managed, developed, increased) and quantify achievements with numbers when possible (increased sales by 25%).
List Your Education
Include your degrees, certifications, and relevant coursework. List your highest level of education first, including the institution name, degree earned, and graduation year.
Recent graduates can include relevant coursework, academic achievements, and GPA (if 3.5 or higher).
Highlight Your Skills
Simply CV allows you to add the following skills: technical, soft, tools and technologies, hobby, language. Add as many as you want in each group.
Focus on skills that are most relevant to the job you're applying for. Match your skills to the job requirements. If no hobbies are mentioned or required do not include them when you download your CV
Add note-worthy projects
Make reference to some projects and community engagements that would be of interest to the recruiter.
For each of the projects, add your key contributions. Community engagements are a good indicator that you are an all-rounded individual.
Review & Download
Proofread your CV carefully for spelling and grammar errors. Preview how it looks, then download it as a PDF. PDF format ensures your formatting stays consistent across all devices.
Ask a friend or mentor to review your CV before sending it to employers. Fresh eyes catch mistakes you might miss!
πΌ Tips & Best Practices
Expert advice to make your CV stand out
Keep It Concise
Aim for 1-2 pages maximum. Recruiters spend an average of 6 seconds scanning a CV, so make every word count. Focus on your most relevant and recent experience.
Tailor for Each Job
Customize your CV for each application by emphasizing relevant skills and experiences. Use keywords from the job description to pass ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems).
Use Numbers & Metrics
Quantify your achievements whenever possible. Instead of "Managed a team," say "Managed a team of 12, increasing productivity by 30%."
Action Verbs Matter
Start bullet points with strong action verbs: Led, Developed, Implemented, Achieved, Designed, Optimized, Increased, Reduced.
Proofread Carefully
Spelling or grammar errors can disqualify you immediately. Use spell-check, read it aloud, and have someone else review it before sending.
Common CV Mistakes to Avoid
Replace coolguyjoe123@email.com with firstname.lastname@email.com
Skip your age, marital status, photo (unless required), or unrelated hobbies
Focus on what you accomplished, not just what you were responsible for
Tailor your CV to highlight skills relevant to each specific job
